Plot, order and compare multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000.

To compare two whole numbers, compare the
digits in each place from left to right.

Example:

Compare the digits in each place from left to right.
Start with the hundred thousands place.

6 = 6

The digits in the hundred thousands place are equal, so compare the digits in the ten thousands place.

1 = 1

The digits in the ten thousands place are equal, so compare the digits in the thousands place.

2 = 2

The digits in the thousands place are equal, so compare the digits in the hundreds place.

2 = 2

The digits in the hundreds place are equal, so compare the digits in the tens place.

4 = 4

The digits in the tens place are equal, so compare the digits in the ones place.

2 < 3

Since 2 < 3, 612,242 < 612,243.

To order a set of whole numbers, compare the numbers in pairs
to list the numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Example:

First, compare the digits in the thousands place of each number.
The numbers all have a 4 in the thousands place, so compare the digits in the hundreds place of each number.

1 < 6

Since 1 < 6, 4,186 and 4,168 are less than 4,618 and 4,681.

Next, compare the digits in the tens places of 4,186 and 4,168.

6 < 8

Since 6 < 8, 4,168 < 4,186.

Then, compare the digits in the tens places of 4,618 and 4,681.

1 < 8

Since 1 < 8, 4,618 < 4,681.

So, the numbers in order from least to greatest are
4,168, 4,186, 4,618, 4,681, and the numbers in order from greatest to least are 4,681, 4,618, 4,186, 4,168.
