Picture Clues and Word Clues
Clues
A clue is a hint. A clue helps us learn a new word. A picture can be a clue. The words near the new word can be clues, too.
Picture clues First, we hear or read the new word. Then we look at the picture. It can show what the word means. It can help us check the meaning, too.
Example:
The new word is bluebonnets. The words say they fill the fields. They do not say what they are.
Picture clue: Look at the picture. It shows a plant. It has lots of small blue flowers.
Bluebonnets are blue flowers.
The picture helped us learn the word. The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas.
Word clues We can hear or read the words near a new word. They can tell us what it means.
Example:
The new word is scorching. There is no picture this time. So we use the other words.
Word clues:
The sun was very, very hot.
The sidewalk was too hot to touch.
Ana sat in the shade to cool off.
Scorching means very, very hot.
The words helped us learn what it means.
Use Our New Words
Answer with new words We can use new words when we answer. We use a new word when it fits. It fits when its meaning is right.
Here are new words we learned.
Enormous means very big.
Swift means fast.
Exhausted means very tired.
Gloomy means sad.
Example:
Think of what each word means. Enormous means very big. Swift means fast.
The castle is as tall as Dad. So it is very big. It does not move fast. So swift does not fit. So enormous fits.
Now we answer with the new word.
The sand castle is enormous.
