PLANNING YOUR WRITING

Before you begin writing, you should make a plan.

This will help organize your thoughts more clearly.

GENERATING IDEAS
Begin your planning by generating ideas for writing. This will help you narrow down a topic to write about. There are many ways to generate ideas.

Brainstorming — This means to come up with as many ideas as possible. It can be done alone or by talking with others in a group.

Drawing — Drawing pictures is another way to come up with ideas. It may be easier to draw a picture than write down words.

Ideas maps/webs — These may also be known as story maps/webs. Using an idea or story map can help show the connections between ideas more easily.

NOTE: Make sure that the ideas you come up with match your writing assignment!

Pets can be a wonderful addition to any family! They provide love and companionship.

Write an essay about a pet that you would like to have. This pet can be any animal that you like.

What topics would fit with this assignment?

dogs, cats, fish, birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, sheep, goats

ASKING QUESTIONS

Once you have a topic, you can ask questions to further plan out your writing.

Different questions can be asked depending on the type of writing.

Sometimes it can be nice to just turn off your alarm and sleep in for the day. It is a great way to refresh your energy!

Write about a time when you slept in.

The writing this assignment asks for is a personal narrative.

It is a type of true story.

Example Questions:

What day did I sleep in?

Why did I sleep in then?

How did I feel after sleeping in?

It may not look like there is much in the desert, but there are many animals that make their homes there. Choose a specific desert animal, and find more information about it.

Write a report on the desert animal of your choice.

The writing that this assignment asks for is an informational report.

Example Questions:

What does my chosen animal look like?

What does my chosen animal eat?

Where in the desert does my chosen animal live?

APPROPRIATE MODE OF DELIVERY

When planning to write, think about how your work should be presented. Does it need to be in writing only? Or are there other things that need to be included?

An acrostic is a poem where the first letter of every line spells out a word or message. In the example to the left, the poem spells out the word "NEWS."

Write an acrostic poem using the first letter of each line to spell out your name. Then, everyone will take turns reciting their written poems.
