Explain how an author establishes and achieves purpose(s) through diction and syntax

Text structure refers to the way an author organizes the information in a text. Different text structures can provide different information about a topic. The structure of a text also helps contribute to an author's purpose for writing it.

In texts that are written to inform readers, there are a number of different structures that authors may use to organize their information.

Classification/Topical

In the classification/topical structure, a general topic is broken down into further related subtopics. It is usually used to give a general overview of a topic.

Chronological/Sequential

In the chronological/sequential structure, ideas are described in a specific order. Chronological order refers to time order from the earliest to latest. Sequential order typically refers to the steps in a specific process.

Compare - Contrast

In the compare-contrast structure, the similarities and/or differences between two or more topics are examined.

Cause - Effect

In the cause-effect structure, what led to a certain idea or event, and the outcome of it being created or occurring, are described.

Problem - Solution

In the problem-solution structure, an issue facing people, society, or the world is described, and then current or potential solutions to the issue are explained.

In texts that are written to persuade readers, the proposition-support structure is typically used. Other text structures, like the ones presented above, may then be used to further organize the information.

Proposition - Support

In the proposition-support structure, a judgment or claim about an idea or topic is expressed. In the rest of the text, facts, details, and opinions are used to support the original claim.

In texts that are written to entertain readers, the text structure will vary depending on what the author has written. In fictional texts written for entertainment, they will typically follow a narrative structure.

Narrative

Narrative structure typically includes the plot and setting of a story. The events in a story may be told in a linear or nonlinear manner.
